SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team (5-6-2) dominated the statistics, but lost to Oneonta State (6-6-1) on Wednesday, Oct. 12, by the score of 2-0. SU owned a 17-9 advantage in shots for the match and held the ball in the Red Dragons’ end of the field for the majority of the second half, but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.
The Orange outshot Oneonta after halftime, 9-5, and ripped seven shots on goal in the contest to just three for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta took a 1-0 lead at the 14:49 mark on an unassisted goal by Matt Watts. A Red Dragon player fanned on a shot, the ball bounced right to Watts just inside the 18 and he ripped a shot into the open net. Oneonta extended its margin in the 51st minute when Adam Gercke corralled a loose ball and chipped it past SU keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario).
Syracuse had several good scoring chances in the second half, consistently serving the ball into the box, but the Red Dragons’ defense was up to the task and kept the Orange off the scoreboard. SU’s best scoring opportunity came off a free kick in the 50th minute. Sophomore defender Brad Peetoom’s (Abbotsford, British Columbia) header was ticketed for the back of the Red Dragons’ net, but Oneonta keeper Timothy Melia leaped up and snatched it out of the air.
Sophomore James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H.) led the Orange offense with four shots, including two on goal. Rookie Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) also notched two shots on goal for the Orange. Freshman Anton Nicholls (Bridgetown, Barbados) saw the first action of his career in the match and recorded one shot.
Cavicchia made one save for the Orange in the contest. Melia finished with seven stops for the Red Dragons.
The loss marked the first time Oneonta defeated Syracuse since 1988.
The Orange return to BIG EAST Conference competition on Saturday, Oct. 15 when it meets #18 Cincinnati at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Admission to the match is free and gates will open at approximately 6:00 p.m.
