Tennis Team Wins Three Singles Titles at Hampton Roads

NEWPORT NEWS, VA.- The Syracuse Orange came away with three singles titles at the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Va. this weekend with Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.), Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) each winning their respective singles flights.
Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) made it to the finals of the Flight A singles draw by beating Barbara Zidek of William & Mary, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals. She went on to lose in the finals to Megan Moulton-Levy also from William & Mary. Also in Flight A, Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bounced back from her first round loss on Friday to make it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket with a win against James Madison’s Kristen Nordstrom, 8-3. The consolation was not played out beyond the semifinals.
Bramante came away with the C-1 singles draw title defeating Klauduna Kasztelaniec of William & Mary, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals. She won five matches on the weekend en route to the title.
Vasilyeva won the Flight D-1 bracket. She capped off her stellar run by pulling off a routine 6-1, 6-1 victory in the finals over Radford’s Neely Edwards.
Leong won the D-2 singles flight in similar fashion as Vasilyeva won her flight. Leong won 6-2, 6-1 against Julie Schiller of Delaware in the finals.
In doubles action, Saturday’s play set-up an all-Syracuse final in the Flight D-2 doubles draw with Zeljka Juricek (Zagreb, Croatia) and Vasilyeva earning a chance to play teammates Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) and Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif.), however the championship match was not played. It was the second time this season that the two pairing were to meet in the finals of a tournament this season after Huignard/Lipton defeated Juricek/Vasilyeva, 8-3, in the finals of the Flight B doubles draw at the Yale Invitational, Sept. 16-18.
The Orange posted an impressive mark of 34-7 in total matches played at this weekend’s event including three titles.
SU will next be in action Oct. 21-25 when it travels to West Point N.Y. to take part in the ITA Indoor Fall Regional.
