CARY, NC – The V Foundation for Cancer Research will honor Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim and Connecticut head basketball coach Jim Calhoun at the second annual Spirit of Jimmy V Gala to be held April 21 in New York City, V Foundation CEO Nick Valvano announced Thursday.
The Hall of Fame coaches and spirited cancer survivors will be honored as the “Spirit of Jimmy V” honorees at the event at Chelsea Piers’ PIER SIXTY. The “Spirit of Jimmy V honoree is someone who exemplifies the spirit demonstrated by the late Jim Valvano during his battle against cancer. Jim’s challenge, “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up!”® issued during the inaugural ESPY Awards in 1993 is The V Foundation motto.
“We are proud to recognize both Jim Boeheim and Jim Calhoun for their outstanding spirit and achievements on and off the court,” said Nick Valvano. “It is exciting to honor two of Jim’s coaching colleagues and to recognize their triumphs over cancer as well as their excellence in the coaching profession.”
Boeheim and Calhoun have experienced numerous parallels in their personal and professional lives. Both are 2005 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductees. They bring 703 victories apiece into the 2005-06 season. And each led his team to a national championship a year after battling prostate cancer.
The Spirit of Jimmy V Gala will also feature ESPN and ABC Sports commentator Dick Vitale, who will serve as the “Friend of V” speaker.
Boeheim and Calhoun will join Rudolph W. Giuliani as distinguished “Spirit of Jimmy V” honorees. The former New York mayor was the inaugural “Spirit of Jimmy V” honoree at the first-ever Spirit of Jimmy V Gala in April. The inaugural event raised more than $500,000 for cancer research.

Boeheim is also scheduled to receive the John Wooden "Legends of Coaching" Award, presented by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, next April.
