Orange Looks to Seal Postseason Berth

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse women’s soccer team will play its final two games of the regular season this weekend as it travels to take on Marquette at 7 p.m. on Friday before capping off its regular season on Sunday at South Florida at 1 p.m. The Orange enters the final weekend of the season in fourth place in the BIG EAST Division A with a conference record of 2-4-3 for nine total points towards the standings.
The top five teams in each of the two BIG EAST divisions advance to the conference tournament. The Orange, currently fourth in its division, is looking to hold off Pittsburgh and St. John’s who are on SU’s heels with eight points each. Also still in contention areSouth Florida with six points and Providence with five points. Teams are awarded three points in the standings for each win, while one point is awarded for a tie.
SU enters Friday’s game coming off a 3-2 overtime loss at Seton Hall Sunday night. In that game, Molly McManus (Binghamton, N.Y) scored her second goal of the season, while Karrah Benson (Germantown, Md.) scored her first career goal to send the game to overtime. It was the first loss for SU this season when it has scored more than one goal.
Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) moved to third all-time at SU in career saves with her nine stops against the Pirates. She has 175 career saves. She is fourth all-time in career shutouts with seven, two this season.
Marquette enters Friday’s game as the 15th ranked team in the country in the latest soccerbuzz.com rankings released Monday with a record of 14-2-1, 6-2-0 in the BIG EAST. Marquette is coming off a 2-1 overtime victory against Louisville on Sunday. Julie Thompson scored the game-winning goal in that game with 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
On the season, Christy Zwolski leads the team with eight goals, while Alison Loughrin is second with six. This week's BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Week Meghan Connelly leads the team in assists with six. In goal, Laura Boyer has 84 saves and a goals against average of 0.75.
South Florida enters the weekend with a record of 6-6-3, 1-5-3 in the BIG EAST after winning its first conference game of the season on Sunday, 3-2, in overtime against Cincinnati. Megan Morton scored the game-winner in the 99th minute.
The Bulls are led this season by Jenny Mulvibill who has six goals scored. Erica Lewis is second on the team with three goals scored. Katie Reed and Michelle Buskey lead the team in assists with four.
Syracuse has never played Marquette or South Florida.
