SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) recorded her second two-goal game of the season as the SU field hockey team defeated Quinnipiac, 3-0, at Coyne Field. It was the second-straight win for the Orange, who improved its season record to 9-7 and will next play at home for the BIG EAST Conference regular season championship on Sunday, Oct. 23, against Connecticut at 1 p.m. SU currently owns a 3-1 mark in league play. A win against the Huskies will secure the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the Nov. 4 BIG EAST Tournament at Rutgers.
Against Quinnipiac (9-7), the Orange quickly got on the scoreboard thanks to a Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley) penalty corner shot that found the back of the cage just 2:39 into the contest.
Sullivan gave Syracuse a 2-0 lead less than two minutes later after she finished a long ball hit into the circle by junior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield).
The Orange dominated play in the first half, outshooting the Bobcats, 12-2, and keeping them from attempting a single penalty corner.
Sullivan netted her second goal of the afternoon with 24:41 remaining in the game. She received the ball inside the circle on the left side. Instead of using a reverse stick, she got her feet around quickly and sent the ball into the lower right corner of the cage. It was her career-high 11th goal of the season and 20th of her career. Sullivan now leads the team in scoring with 24 points (11 goals, two assists).
SU used two goalkeepers against the Bobcats. Freshman Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) started the contest and played the entire first half, while sophomore Marie O'Brien played the second half and had three saves, all in the closing minutes.
Quinnipiac's Erin McKay finished the game with seven saves. Danielle Avenoso led the Bobcats with four shots.
