Duenas Wins Three at Army Invite

WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Syracuse University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the Army Invitational today taking home several first place finishes. Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fl.) had three first place finishes to lead the women’s team, while Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.), Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) and Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) each had two first place finishes.
On the men’s side, Caponera took first in both the 50-free and 100-free in times of 22.00 and 47.55, respectively. Persico was a two-time winner after finishing first in the 100-back in a time of 52.72, while also claiming the 200-back in a time of 1:55.36.
Boral swam to a first place finish in the 200-IM in a time of 1:56.29. He went on to finish first for a second time on the day when he won the 200-breast in a time of 2:06.2. Other winners on the day were Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) who won the 1000-free in a time of 9:55.09 and Gustavo Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who won the 400-IM in a time of 4:12.76.
Duenas set the pace for the women’s team by winning the 200-IM in a time of 2:09.14, the 400-IM in a time of 4:29.69 and the 200-fly in a time of 2:06.75. Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) had a great day in the pool as well winning the 1000-free in a time of 10:35.34, before taking first in the 500-free in a time of 5:09.10.
Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) won the 100-fly in a time of 59.12, while Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario) took first in the 200-back in a time of 2:08.89. Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) earned first place points for the Orange in the 100-free in a time of 54.01.
The Orange will next be in the pool on Saturday (Oct. 29) when it hosts Pittsburgh in a BIG EAST Conference match-up. Diving will begin at 9 a.m., with swimming events to follow at 12 p.m.
