
SU Preparing to Host Cincinnati on the Gridiron

The Orange football squad will square off against Cincinnati this Saturday (October 29) in the Carrier Dome. Senior free safety Anthony Smith (Hubbard, Ohio) , who set the SU record for career blocked kicks with his sixth at Pittsburgh on Saturday, and the Orange defense will try to improve on its 2005 turnover total, which is tied for 13th in the country. Syracuse has forced 18 opponent turnovers, including 11 interceptions which ranks 11th nationally. The Orange pass defense is also the 11th best in Division IA. Smith recorded his 13th career interception at Pittsburgh, which ties for third in SU history. Smith's five interceptions this season is second in the country and his 1.71 passes defended ranks third nationally. Senior defensive end James Wyche (Roosevelt, N.Y.) is tied for 11th in the country in forced fumbles (0.43 per game). Against Pittsburgh he forced and recovered a fumble after sacking Panther quarterback Tyler Palko.
Senior punter Brendan Carney (Valley Forge, Pa.) is 16th in the country with a 43.9 yards per punt average. SU's 38.2 net yards per punt leads the BIG EAST.
