SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior free safety Anthony Smith was named to the conference’s weekly Honor Roll for his performance last Saturday at Pittsburgh. In the game, he led the team in tackles with 12, including nine solo stops, had an interception return of 73 yards, and blocked the sixth punt of his career.
The blocked kick made Smith the all-time leader at SU in that category, passing David Tyree. The block led to seven points, as Reggie McCoy picked up the loose ball and returned it to the end zone.
Smith’s interception of Tyler Palko’s pass began in the end zone, but Smith returned it 73 yards well into Pitt territory. His fifth interception this season gives him 13 in his career, which ties him with Walt Slovenski for third all-time. Smith is ranked second in the nation in interceptions (.71) and third in passes defended (1.71).
The Orange returns home to host BIG EAST newcomer Cincinnati on Saturday, Oct. 29, at noon. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional Television, with Dave Sims and John Congemi calling the action.
Tickets are still available for the game and can be purchased online or at the Carrier Dome by calling 1-888-DOMETIX.
