SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) scored her team-high 12th goal of the season early in the first half as the Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Cornell, 1-0, at Coyne Field. The Orange, who has not lost to the Big Red since the 1983 season, improved its all-time series record against Cornell to 22-1-1.
Sullivan finished off a pretty display of passing by SU just 7:49 into the contest. Junior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) intercepted a pass just inside the 50-yard line and bolted towards the goal. She sent the ball to junior forward Ashley Fry's (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) stick, who carried it into the circle and then promptly dished off to Sullivan on her left. Sullivan sent a high shot into the cage in what would prove to be the lone goal of the night.
Cornell (9-6) mustered five shots on goal and even attempted four penalty corners, while the Orange only had one corner the entire game. SU freshman goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made a key save on one of the Big Red's corners and finished with four saves on the night en route to her second shutout of the season.
Shannon Prescott started in goal for Cornell and had four saves.
The Orange improved its season record to 10-8 and will next be in action on Sunday, Oct. 30, at home against Dartmouth at 1:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Sullivan and Jess Dahle (Farmington, Conn./Farmington), SU's co-captains this season. It will also mark Syracuse's final regular-season game. The Orange will go on to compete in the 2005 BIG EAST Conference Tournament for the 16th time in the 17-year history of the event. SU earned the No. 4 seed and will play No. 1 Villanova at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4, at Rutgers University's Stadium Complex. The other semifinal pits No. 2 Connecticut against No. 3 Louisville at 7 p.m. The BIG EAST Championship game will be played at noon on Nov. 6. The winner will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
