SYRACUSE, N.Y., Oct. 28, 2005 – Senior Kristen Conway tallied a match-high 16 kills while senior Kelly Duan added 15 to lead the Orange to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-26) win against Rutgers in BIG EAST action tonight at the Women’s Building. The triumph is SU’s eighth in a row as it improves to 20-7, 8-2 BIG EAST.
Senior Aila Dommestrup compiled 42 assists in the win, as sophomore Joscie Kaup dug 10 attacks. Sophomore Jen Malcom registered a team-best five total blocks for the Orange.
In the opening game, SU and Rutgers were tied five times, all the way to 18-18. After a kill from Conway put the Orange up 19-18, SU scored another three points for a decisive four-point rally. Conway had another kill in that stretch, while senior Katie Allen also had one. SU would expand its lead to 27-20 thanks to a Scarlet Knights ball handling error, and the Orange went on to take game one 30-22.
Dommestrup started game two strong for the Orange, as she scored the first four points from the service line. An ace and three Rutgers miscues gave SU the lead. The Scarlet Knights clawed their way back and tied the game 8-8 on a service ace from Lora Yankauskas. The two teams would then battle back and forth all the way to 23-23, with neither team taking a lead of more than two points. At 23-23, Duan put down a kill, Conway delivered an ace, and another Rutgers mistake gave SU a strong 26-23 advantage. Yankauskas responded with another kill, and Amande Meyer stuffed an SU attack to bring the score to 26-25. A service error made the score 27-25 in favor of the Orange, but Yankouskas single-handedly tied the game with two more kills. That is all the points Rutgers would score, however, as the Orange rattled of the next three to win 30-27. Duan and sophomore Cheryl Cobbina both had kills in the final run.
SU began game three by slowly pulling away from the Scarlet Knights, building a 12-8 lead after Malcom notched a kill. SU would keep that lead throughout the game, with Rutgers coming as close as 18-17 on another Meyer block. Freshman Brittany Kern quickly retaliated, recording two kills to give SU a 20-17 lead. Conway followed suit with two of her own to extend the Orange advantage to 22-17. That lead would prove to be enough, as SU won the final game 30-26.
For the Scarlet Knights (9-13, 4-5 BIG EAST), Yankauskas had 14 kills. Meyer registered seven total blocks, while Courtney Stout had 10 digs.
The 20th win this season marks the sixth time that head coach Jing Pu has led SU to at least 20 wins in a season. Its 8-2 BIG EAST mark matches last season’s conference mark, which is the best since the Orange went 9-2 in the conference in 1990.
SU is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Fordham in a non-conference match up at 2:00 p.m. at Manley Field House.
