Syracuse University athletics teams are a perfect 3-0 in games played in the Carrier Dome on this date in the 25-year history of the building. The football squad defeated East Carolina in its only game played on this date, while the men's soccer is 2-0.
Kicker John Biskup's 24-yard field goal with four seconds to play lifted the football team to an 18-16 triumph against East Carolina on this date in 1989. It was his fourth field goal of the day. East Carolina jumped to a 16-9 halftime lead on two touchdowns and a safety. The sack in the end zone left quarterback Bill Scharr with an injured shoulder, and Mark McDonald took over for the remainder of the game. He connected on 17-of-22 passes for 200 yards, including a clutch fourth-down completion to Duane Kinnon on SU’s winning drive. Michael Owens gave his third 100-yard effort in the last four games, finishing with 111. On the defensive side of the ball, David Bavaro recorded 15 tackles and Terry Wooden added an interception.
Paul Young scored a pair of goals to lead the men's soccer squad to a 3-1 win against Oneonta on this date in 1992. SU took a 1-0 lead at the 19:24 mark when Oneonta’s Lou Hanner tipped a shot by Young into his own goal. The Red Dragons came back to tie the game at 26:50, but SU countered with a second score by Young at the 57:28 mark on a lead pass by Ed Sep, giving the Orange the lead for good.
In 1995, Syracuse defeated BIG EAST foe Seton Hall, 1-0. Senior Jason Clarke scored a goal on an assist from Jeff Knittel in the 72nd minute go give SU the victory. The win started SU on a three-game winning streak, and improved its record to 9-6-1 overall and 5-5-0 in the conference.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
