SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women’s basketball team will have a new home for the upcoming 2005-06 season – the Carrier Dome. The Orange will play 10 of its 13 home games in the facility this year, including showdowns with perennial national powers Notre Dame and Connecticut.
"We have a vision for the women's basketball team at Syracuse to become a big time program," Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross said. "That's why we are moving as many games to the Carrier Dome as possible this year. This is just the start of a growing process that will make us a Final Four caliber program."
The Orange will make its 2005-06 Dome debut on Saturday, Dec. 10 against Massachusetts at 1:00 p.m. Syracuse will also meet non-league foes Binghamton (Dec. 17) and Quinnipiac (Dec. 22) in the building, as well as BIG EAST opponents Louisville (Jan.3), West Virginia (Jan.7), Marquette (Jan. 14), Cincinnati (Jan. 21), Notre Dame (Jan. 31), Georgetown (Feb. 8) and Connecticut (Feb. 22).
“I’m very excited about playing in the Dome,” SU women’s basketball head coach Keith Cieplicki said. “It is one of the most recognizable buildings in college athletics and having our games there is a huge step for our program as we continue to strive to become one of the elite teams in women’s college basketball.”
The 2005-06 home opener versus Sacred Heart on Sunday, Nov. 27 will be played at Manley Field House, along with the Orange’s tilt with Colgate on Nov. 29. The regular-season home finale against St. John’s on Feb. 25 with also take place at Manley, as well as SU’s two exhibition contests (Nov. 5 versus Bishops and Nov. 11 against LeMoyne).
This year marks the first time since the 1991-92 season the women’s basketball team will compete in the Carrier Dome. That year, SU defeated Canisius and Saint Joseph’s in the Carrier Classic, but lost to Villanova, 74-63, on Feb. 1, 1992 in its last Dome clash. Overall, the Orange owns a 12-3 record in games played in the facility and made at least one appearance in the Dome every season from 1981-87.
The Carrier Dome opened on Sept. 20, 1980 and has served as the home to SU’s football, men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. It seats 33,000 for basketball games and the SU men have finished in the top four in national attendance every year since the building opened. Syracuse has led the nation in men’s basketball attendance 12 times, including the 2004-05 season. On Feb. 5, 2005, the Orange set the on-campus attendance record when 33,199 spectators flocked to the Dome to see the men’s basketball team defeat Notre Dame.
The Orange women finished with a 13-16 overall record last season and won SU’s first postseason game since 2001-02 with a victory against Georgetown in the 2005 BIG EAST Tournament.
