HANOVER, N.H.- The Orange lost its final non-conference game of the season, 3-1, to Dartmouth Tuesday afternoon. Sarah Johnson of Dartmouth recorded a hat trick against the Orange scoring twice in the second half before closing the door on the Orange midway through the second half with her third goal.
Dartmouth needed just over a minute to get on the board as Johnson scored her first goal of the day just 1:11 into the contest off one of Dartmouth’s four corner kick opportunities in the opening half. Johnson struck again in the 15th minute scoring her sixth goal of the season, from 15 yards out, off a Colleen Kelly assist.
SU pulled within striking distance late in the first half when Lauren Cappelli (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) scored her first career goal on a free kick from 25-yards, narrowing the Dartmouth lead to 2-1 heading into the half.
SU goalkeeper Candice Hofmann, (Marcellus, N.Y.) made seven saves in the first half. She faced nine shots in the half.
Dartmouth’s offensive attack would be tamed in the second half until Johnson netted her third and final goal of the day on a penalty kick in the 66th minute. SU would not have an answer to Johnson’s offensive performance as the game ended in a 3-1 victory for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth out shot SU 20-3 and held a 6-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Amanda Webb and Laurel Peak split time in goal with each playing one half. Webb made one save, while allowing the SU goal.
Hofmann had nine saves in her second career start. Cappelli is the eighth SU player this season to score their first career goal.
Dartmouth improves to 7-3-0 with the win, while SU drops to 3-6-4 overall and remains 2-0-3 in the BIG EAST. The Orange will next be in action Friday at 7 pm. when it returns to the SU Soccer Stadium to take on Connecticut. SU will be going for its 100th win in school history against the Huskies.
