On October 7, 2000, quarterback Troy Nunes threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to David Tyree in the second overtime period to give Syracuse a 24-14 win against Pittsburgh in front of 40,699 fans. Pittsburgh tied the game late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown and two-point conversion. After neither team scored in the first overtime session, SU took first possession in the second. Nunes hit Pat Woodcock for an 18-yard gain on the first play. Three plays later, Nunes connected with Tyree for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. Mike Shafer hit the extra point for a 24-17 SU lead. The Orange defense held Pittsburgh without a score on its possession to secure the win. Nunes completed 20-of-29 passes for a career-high 279 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyree set single-game career highs with 88 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Overall, the SU football squad has played three times in the Carrier Dome on this date, winning two of those contests. In 1995, quarterback Donovan McNabb connected on 14-of-17 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Orange to a 31-14 victory against Temple. In 1989, Syracuse's 16-game home winning streak was snapped in a 41-10 loss to Florida State. Michael Owens rushed for 120 yards against the Seminoles while Rob Moore had four catches for 110 yards.
The Syracuse men's soccer team had a 1-1-1 record on this date in the Dome. In 1992, Paul Young found the net in the 71st minute to give the Orange a 1-0 victory against Villanova. In 1989, the Orange took on regional rival Hartwick. Syracuse entered the game ranked No. 8 in the ISAA poll. Hartick defeated the Orange, 4-0, in what would be SU's last home loss of the season. Syracuse hosted seventh-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson in the Dome in 1984. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie, improving SU's record to 9-1-1. Goalkeeper Rick Fatscher recorded 18 saves in the shutout. The tie earned Syracuse a spot in the national rankings and moved the team to the top spot in the New York Region.
In 1990, the Moscow Circus held its last performance in the Carrier Dome in front of 3,896 fans. The Moscow Circus had eight performances in the Carrier Dome from October 4 through October 7, drawing a total of 47,099 fans.
