This Day in Dome History: November 1
11/1/2005 1:12:44 PM | Football, Dome 25
The Carrier Dome has hosted four SU athletics events, including three football games, on this date since the building opened in 1980. The football Orange has a 2-1 record in those contests while the men's soccer squad is 0-1.
Against West Virginia in 1997, Syracuse found a number of ways to score in a 40-10 victory. Quarterback Donovan McNabb threw a 18-yard touchdown pass to Kaseem Sinceno to give SU an early lead. After a WVU touchdown and field goal, the Orange took the lead for good on McNabb's 15-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Spotwood just before halftime. Two big in the second half helped secure SU's fifth straight win. Wide receiver Kevin Johnson hit Jim Turner on an end around pass for a 50-yard scoring strike, and Jason Poles intercepted a Marc Bulger pass and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. Kyle McIntosh rushed for 145 yards on 20 carries, and Antwaune Ponds recorded 13 tackles.
The Orange has faced Pittsburgh twice on this date. In 1986, Syracuse edged the Panthers, 24-20. Quarterback Don McPherson three for three touchdowns. In 1980, Pittsburgh defeated the Orange, 43-6.
The men's soccer team lost its only game played in the Dome on this date in 1995. Neither Syracuse or No. 10 Cornell scored in regulation. The Big Red took the lead on a goal at the 96:39 mark. SU tied the score less than six minutes later when Matt Yakubisin scored on an assist from Anthony Iannone. Eric Kusseluk scored the game-winner for Cornell at the 115:44 mark. SU goalkeeper Josh McGibbon recorded nine saves in the game.
In 1993, the Carrier Dome hosted the Bob Hope Show.
