The football Orange defeated Maryland, 21-16, in its final home game of the 1994 season. Kirby Dar Dar racked up a career-high 159 yards rushing as Syracuse jumped out to a 21-0 lead and then held on for the victory. Marvin Harrison capped an 11-play, 72-yard drive with a 17-yard TD reception from Kevin Mason for SU’s first touchdown. The Orange put together an 80-yard drive and made the score 14-0 early in the second quarter. Dar Dar scored SU’s final touchdown on a two-yard run. Bryce Bevill intercepted a Maryland pass on the final play of the game to seal the victory.
In 1983, Syracuse defeated West Virginia, 27-16. The Orange led 14-6 at halftime and 21-6 after three quarters. The Mountaineers scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 21-16. Don McAulay hit two field goals to secure the victory. Harold Gayden rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
The Syracuse men’s basketball team won its second straight game, defeating Coppin State, 74-56, on this date in 1998. Jason Hart was one of four Orange to reach double figures in scoring with a team-high 17. He also had three assists and five rebounds. Etan Thomas led SU’s efforts on the boards with 10 rebounds.
The Orange opened the 2000-01 season against St. Francis (NY) in the Carrier Dome. Preston Shumpert was 11-of-16 from the field for a team-high 23 points. Damone Brown added 17 points, while Billy Celuck was SU’s leading rebounder with 14.
Syracuse has also played three exhibition games on this date in 1984, 1990 and 1991.
More than 5,000 fans gathered at the Dome on this date for the first day of the 2004 NYSPHSAA football tournament semifinals. Maine-Endwell beat Iroquois, 33-28, and Chenango Forks beat Hornell, 27-7.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome.
