The football Orange has played twice on this date in the Carrier Dome. The Mountaineers from West Virginia were the opponent in both contests. SU posted a record of 1-1 in the games. In addition, the Syracuse men’s basketball team has played two exhibition games on this date.
In 1991, Syracuse rallied from a 10-6 halftime deficit to beat West Virginia, 16-10. Marvin Graves scored the only touchdown of the game for the Orange on a seven-yard run in the fourth quarter to give SU the lead. John Biskup hit a 49-yard field goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game to seal the victory for the Orange. Graves was 8-for-19 passing for 84 yards, and David Walker led SU’s rushing attack with 118 yards.
Rob Moore broke Syracuse’s single-season record for receptions and receiving yards in SU’s 24-17 loss to West Virginia in 1989. SU led 17-14 at halftime, but the Mountaineers scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter for the victory. Moore had six catches for 123 yards in the game. He finished the 1989 season with 53 receptions for 1,064 yards. Moore became the first Orange receiver to surpass 1,000 career receiving yards. Current Indianapolis Colts’ receiver Marvin Harrison now holds the single-season school mark for yards receiving (1,131) and current Detroit Lion’s receiver holds the record for most receptions (60).
In 1985, Syracuse defeated Utica College, 102-55. It was the first of three games that season the Orange would score 102 points. Rafael Addison led SU with 25 points, and Derek Brower added 11 points.
The Syracuse men’s basketball team faced the Sweden National Team in an exhibition game in 1983. Rafael Addison scored 21 points to lead SU to a 97-82 victory. Sean Kerins added 14 points, and Gene Waldron and Howard Triche each tallied 12 points.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
