The Syracuse football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams have played in the Carrier Dome on this date. The three squads have combined for a 3-0 record in those contests. In addition, the Dome hosted a New Kids on the Block concert in 1990.
Heralded freshman Carmelo Anthony made his official Carrier Dome debut against Valparaiso on this date in 2002. Anthony recorded his second straight double-double in SU’s 81-66 victory. Anthony finished the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Hakim Warrick also posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Gerry McNamara also made his Carrier Dome debut in the game. He finished with 18 points and five assists. It was the first of 30 wins for the Orange that season, a season that culminated with the school’s first men’s basketball national championship.
The men’s basketball squad also faced the Kazakhstan (Russia) National Team in an exhibition game on this date in 1992. The team also held intra-squad scrimmages in 1986 and 1987.
In 2001, the football Orange defeated Boston College, 39-28. James Mungro and Kyle Johnson both scored two touchdowns for SU. Mungro rushed for 15 yards on the first carry of the game to become the sixth player in SU history surpass the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a season. Dwight Freeney’s sack of BC quarterback Brian St. Peirre gave him 17.5 for the season, breaking the BIG EAST single-season record.
The Syracuse women’s basketball team defeated Cornell, 94-65, on this date in 1985. Vera Jones led the Orange with 18 points, while Felisha Legette had 15 points and six rebounds.
The band New Kids on the Block performed in front of 37,293 fans in the Dome on this date in 1990.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
