SYRACUSE, N.Y., Nov. 25, 2005 – Head coach Jing Pu and the 2005 Orange will look to make history on Sunday, Nov. 27, when the NCAA Tournament bracket is announced live on ESPNews between 2:30-3:00 p.m. The Orange is looking to advance to its first NCAA Tournament in the program’s 25 year history.
With a 25-10 overall record and an 11-3 BIG EAST mark, SU is gunning for one of the 35 available at-large berths. The 11 wins is a school record for conference triumphs, and the 25-win season is SU’s second in a row.
According to RichKern.com, the Orange’s RKPI (Rick Kern Percentage Index) is 46, which is third in the Northeast region behind Louisville and Notre Dame. SU is also ranked nationally in blocks per game, as its 2.91 blocks is 30th in the nation.
Most recently in the BIG EAST Championship, SU shocked Pittsburgh with its first-ever win against the Panthers in tournament play. The Orange rebounded from a 0-2 deficit to take a five-game thriller. SU then lost to No. 7 Louisville in the semifinals, 3-1.
SU also took the first game of the regular-season match up against the Cardinals on Nov. 13. Against defending national champion Stanford on Sept. 3, the Orange took the first game of that match as well. In both matches, SU lost 3-1.
Notre Dame earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when it defeated Louisville, 3-2, in the championship match last weekend.
