The Carrier Dome has hosted two concerts, a football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball game on this date during the past 25 years. Syracuse teams have a perfect 3-0 record in those games.
Most recently, the Orange football squad defeated Rutgers, 49-21, on this date in 2000. Running back Dee Brown saved his best performance for his last regular-season game, rushing for 239 yards and three touchdowns. The game was close in the first half before the momentum shifted to Syracuse’s favor. After the Scarlet Knights held a 14-7 halftime lead, James Mungro scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 14-yard run. Quarterback Troy Nunes added a three-yard touchdown run with 4:27 remaining. Brown scored the two-point conversion to give SU a 21-14 lead. Rutgers tied the score on Mike McMahon’s four-yard TD run with 2:13 left in the third quarter. Brown scored at the end of the third quarter and then twice in less than three minutes in the fourth quarter to give SU a 42-21 lead.
In 1995, the men’s basketball team opened the regular season with an 87-63 win against Lafayette. John Wallace recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Cipolla and Otis Hill both added 14 points in the victory.
The women’s basketball squad defeated Cornell, 88-62, on this date in 1983. Chris Palumbi led the Orange with 22 points and nine rebounds. Missy Renehan added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Jadeane Daye recorded 13 assists.
More than 50,000 concert goers have gathered in the Dome on this date. The Rolling Stones performed in front of 43,000 fans on this date in 1981. A crowd of 18,936 watched Kenny Rogers perform in 1983.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
