The Carrier Dome has hosted four men’s basketball games, high school football action and three concerts on this date during the past 25 years.
The men’s basketball squad’s only loss in the Dome on this date came in its most recent contest. Syracuse lost to UNC Charlotte, 96-92, in its 2003 season opener. Gerry McNamara led the Orange with 34 points as the Orange lost its initial Dome outing of a campaign for the first time since the building opened in 1980-81. Charlotte led by as many as 23 in the second half, the last time with 15:07 remaining. McNamara ignited an SU rally with eight points in a 14-3 run during the next three minutes to pull the Orange within 12 points.
Trailing 86-71, McNamara hit consecutive threes, Josh Pace made a jumper, Jeremy McNeil had a dunk and a free throw, and McNamara converted two free throws to shrink the gap to five, 89-84, at the 14:42 mark. McNamara’s three-pointer with 20 seconds left has SU trailing, 93-90 before Charlotte ended the game by making three-of-four free throws in the final16 seconds.
In 1991, Syracuse defeated Cornell, 78-71. The Orange built a 16-point lead with six minutes remaining before the Big Red went on a 12-0 scoring run to cut the lead to four with 2:08 left on the clock. A goaltending call on Syracuse brought Cornell within three with 55 second remaining, SU converted six-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory. Five players reached double figures in scoring for the Orange, led by Adrian Autry’s 15.
Syracuse also faced Cornell on this date in 1985. Dwayne Washington scored 16 points, and Rafael Addison added 13 to lead SU to a 96-62 victory.
In 1983, Syracuse defeated Colgate, 88-49. Washington again the Orange with 16 points, three rebounds and six assists.
Two high school teams were crowned state champions on this date in 2004. Maine-Endwell won the New York State Class A title, and Chenango Forks claimed the Class B championship.
The Rolling Stones performed in front of 43,000 fans for the second straight night on this date in 1981. In addition, Kenny Rogers has performed in the Dome twice on this date, in 1982 and 1988.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
