This Day in Dome History: November 27

The Syracuse men’s basketball has played twice in the Carrier Dome on this date and three high school football teams were crowned state champions exactly one year ago.

In 1989, Billy Owens had 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Orange to a 95-79 victory against Rutgers. A close game throughout, the Scarlet Knights cut SU’s lead to two, 73-71, with 6:11 remaining. Syracuse outscored Rutgers 12-8 in the next five minutes and then scored the final 10 points of the game for the victory. Stephen Thompson finished the game with 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Syracuse defeated Fordham, 66-44, on this date in 1982. Tony Bruin led the Orange with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Leo Rautins added 13 points and eight rebounds.

More than 9,000 fans gathered at the Dome for the second day of the New York State high school football championship. CBA won the Class AA title, and Dobbs Ferry claimed the Class C championship. The Class D winner was Weedsport.

More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.

In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
