The Syracuse men’s basketball has played twice in the Carrier Dome on this date and three high school football teams were crowned state champions exactly one year ago.
In 1989, Billy Owens had 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Orange to a 95-79 victory against Rutgers. A close game throughout, the Scarlet Knights cut SU’s lead to two, 73-71, with 6:11 remaining. Syracuse outscored Rutgers 12-8 in the next five minutes and then scored the final 10 points of the game for the victory. Stephen Thompson finished the game with 29 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
