SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Amanda Pape scored two of her team-high 20 points with 9:30 remaining in the first half to give Sacred Heart a lead it did not relinquish in an 84-57 victory against Syracuse at Manley Field House on Sunday, Nov. 27. SU is now 2-2 on the season, while Sacred Heart improved to 2-1. The game was the home opener for the Orange, which lost its home starter for the first time under Coach Keith Cieplicki.
The Orange led 16-10 at the 13:20 mark of the first half after junior Ashley McMillen (Penfield, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer. It was SU’s largest lead of the game.
The Pioneers battled to within one, 18-17, following a three by Lisa Moray and layups by Kerri Burke and Mary Rush. Pape gave Sacred Heart its first lead of the contest with a long jumper with 9:30 to go in the half and the Pioneers closed the period with a 23-7 scoring run. Burke keyed the stretch with seven points. The Pioneers led, 38-25, at the half and with 6:04 remaining in the contest, built a 30-point lead, 75-45.
The bright spot for Syracuse was the play of sophomore center Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania), who finished with 20 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. She also had six rebounds. Junior guard/forward Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) added eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
The Sacred Heart defense held the Orange to a 35.9 shooting percentage for the game. Meanwhile, the Pioneers connected on 41.7 percent of its shots (30-of-72) and outrebounded SU by a 52-39 margin. The Pioneers also hit 8-of-23 (34.8) attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
Pape and Jasmine Walker each grabbed 11 rebounds. Burke had 16 points and five assists. Other double-figure scorers for the Pioneers were Rush (13 points) and Nicolle Rubino (11 points).
For Syracuse, rookie Cintia Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied a career-best six points in 17 minutes. Sophomore Amanda Adamson (Littleton, Colo.) chipped in a season-high eight points and freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) finished with a personal-best seven assists. Sophomore Mary Joe Riley (Inkster, Mich.) made her first start of the season at the guard position.
The Orange will host Colgate in its next game on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Manley Field House. Tip off is at 7:00 p.m.
