SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior free safety Anthony Smith (Hubbard, Ohio) has been selected to participate in the 57th annual Senior Bowl on January 28, 2006, in Mobile, Alabama. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.
Last season, Walter Reyes and Adam Terry represented the Orange in the Senior Bowl.
Smith is the 50th SU student-athlete to compete in the Senior Bowl. It marks the 10th year in a row that the Orange has sent a departing senior to the Senior Bowl. The game will be played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium with the kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m. in front of the national television audience. Smith finished the 2005 season with six interceptions, which is currently tied for second in the nation. His 14 passes defended this year are tied for 12th in the country. Smith ranks third on the Orange’s all-time interceptions list with 14. His six picks this year is the most by an SU defender since 1995 and his season total is tied for third in a single season in Orange history.
In the BIG EAST, his six interceptions this season ties him for seventh in a single-season in the conference’s history. Smith’s 14 picks is tied for third on the all-time BIG EAST ledger. He leads the conference in picks this season, is tied for second in passes defended, and is tied for 14th in tackles.
Smith has totaled 32 passes defended (14 interceptions, 18 pass break ups) in his four-year career in Orange, which is eighth on the career list at SU.
