The Syracuse football team has a 3-1 record on games played on November 8 in the Carrier Dome, while the men’s basketball squad won its only game played on this date, an exhibition game against St. Rose last season.
The senior class went out in style, as the Orange defeated Boston College, 20-13, in the final home game of the 1997 season. Nate Trout broke a 10-10 tie with a field goal in the third quarter, a career-long tying 43 yarder. Donovan McNabb hit Kevin Johnson on a 66-yard touchdown pass with 12:38 remaining in the game before Boston College hit a field goal to cut the lead to 20-13. On the Eagles’ final two possessions, Tebucky Jones caused and recovered a fumble to thwart one drive, and Phil Nash intercepted a pass to secure the victory. Kyle McIntosh rushed for 125 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown. McNabb passed for 221 yards and a touchdowns, and Jim Turner caught a career-high five passes for 61 yards.
Playing in all orange uniforms for the first time since 2001, SU defeated Temple, 41-17, before 43,149 fans in the Dome on this date in 2003. Walter Reyes ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Quarterback R.J. Anderson completed 16-of-20 passes for 221 yards and touchdown. He also ran for 39 yards and a touchdown. Kelvin Smith paced the defense with nine tackles, while Rich Scanlon and Diamond Ferri each had eight stops.
Syracuse rushed for more than 200 yards on its way to a 31-22 victory against Navy in 1986. Scott Schwedes scored two touchdowns for the Orange, one on a 18-yard pass from Don McPherson and another on an 80-yard punt return.
The football Orange’s lone Dome loss on this date came in 1980. Navy defeated Syracuse, 6-3, in that game.
Last season the men’s basketball hosted St. Rose in an exhibition game on this date. Hakim Warrick scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, had four blocks, five assists and a steal to lead SU to a 81-59 victory. Josh Pace and Demetris Nichols added 17 points each.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
