SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse (1-0) and Cornell (1-0) will meet in the regional final of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. The game is the second in a doubleheader that also features Bethune-Cookman and St. Francis (Pa.) squaring off in consolation action at 6 p.m. The winner of the Syracuse vs. Cornell game will advance to the tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 17.
This will mark the 114th meeting between Syracuse and Cornell in the sport of men's basketball. The Orange leads the all-time series, 82-31, including an 82-69 victory in last year's matchup. SU and Cornell last met on Dec. 20, 2004 in the Carrier Dome.
The No. 16-ranked Orange won its season-opening contest last night against Bethune-Cookman, 68-37. Junior forward Terrence Roberts scored a team-high 15 points. Classmate Demetris Nichols netted 11 points, had a career-high five assists and grabbed six rebounds. Sophomore guard Josh Wright contributed with a career-high 10 points in 17 minutes of action.
The Big Red is coming off last night's 75-54 victory over Saint Francis in the first college basketball game of the season. Seniors Ryan Rourke (25 points, nine rebounds) and Lenny Collins (17 points, six rebounds) got their senior seasons off on the right foot, while junior Jason Hartford (16 points and 11 rebound) and Adam Gore (11 points, four rebounds) opened their Big Red careers with outstanding efforts. The Big Red defense limited the Red Flash to 32 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded St. Francis 46-30 in picking up the program's first-ever win at the Carrier Dome (1-14).
Jim Boeheim's team is the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Coaches vs. Cancer defending champion, defeating Memphis 77-62 in last year's final at MSG.
