SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior guard Gerry McNamara hit three three pointers, while junior forward Demetris Nichols scored seven points during a pivotal 19-0 Syracuse second-half run which pushed the Orange to a 58-35 victory against Colgate in front of 20,836 at the Carrier Dome. The 35 points by the Raiders were the fewest ever scored by an opponent at the Dome.
This was Syracuse's 41st straight win against a team from New York State. It was the 40th consecutive win against Colgate in the all-time series between the two schools.
The Orange improved its season record to 7-2 and will be in action again on Sunday, Dec. 18, at home against Davidson at 1 p.m. The game will be televised by Time Warner 26.
Colgate (4-5) held the lead for the first 12 minutes of the first half. The Raiders' Kyle Chones scored the game's first basket, a three pointer, which gave his team a 3-0 advantage. The Raiders led by as many as five points, 9-4, after Kyle Roemer drained a three from the right corner. It was Colgate's third three-pointer of the game. Alvin Reed had previously pulled up from beyond the arc for a successful long ball at the 17:25 mark.
The Orange used a 15-3 run to capture a seven-point lead, 19-12, with 5:49 remaining in the first half. McNamara tied the score at 9-9 with a three-pointer. Kyle Chones recorded Colgate's lone three points during the stretch off his second three of the night. Meanwhile, Nichols, Terrence Roberts, Darryl Watkins and Josh Wright all scored easy baskets to help get Syracuse back in the game. The Orange led at halftime, 22-18.
Freshman guard Eric Devendorf, making his fourth consecutive start for the Orange, scored six of SU's first eight points to start the second half. He had a steal and a layup to give Syracuse a 28-20 lead. McNamara sank two free throws after Colgate coach Emmett Davis was whistled for a technical foul at the 16:33 mark. The foul shots gave SU a 30-20 lead.
Reed scored two points off a layup to pull Colgate to within eight points, 30-22, and that would be as close as the Raiders would get the rest of the night. Nichols hit a floater in the lane and a three pointer, while McNamara scored a three of his own to give SU a 38-22 lead with 11:57 remaining. Those plays helped key SU's impressive 19-0 run. Next, Nichols layed in a Devendorf missed three and Roberts used a pivot in the post around Simon Knight to score off the glass and draw a foul which gave the Orange a 43-22 lead with 10:52 remaining.
Roberts found McNamara for an open three-point look at the 9:40 mark and again after a dramatic block by Watkins which led to a Syracuse team in transition. McNamara's three with 8:42 left gave the Orange its largest lead of the night, 49-22.
McNamara finished with a game-high 14 points. He was 4-of-6 from three-point range. Nichols ended up with 13 points, while Roberts had nine points and six blocks.
For Colgate, Reed was the high scorer with 11 points. Kyle Chones finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The Raiders shot just 29.8 percent from the field for the game.
