SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Anthony Smith was named the recipient of the Cory Stringer Golden Helmet Award, given to a football student-athlete from Trumbull County, Ohio who has excelled at the collegiate level.
A student-athlete must be in his last year of eligibility to be eligible for the award. It is given to a student-athlete that not only excelled in football, but has character that goes beyond the playing field.
This season, Smith is tied for second in the nation in interceptions (.55) and tied for 12th in passes defended (1.50). He ranks first all-time at SU with six blocked kicks, while his 14 interceptions are third all-time at SU and tied for third in the BIG EAST record book. He has also totaled 293 career tackles, which is third all-time at Syracuse for tackles by a defensive back.
Smith is the first player to ever win the Trumbull County Player of the Year award in high school and then earn the Cory Stringer Golden Helmet Award. He and former Ohio State standout Maurice Clarett shared Trumbull County Player of the Year honors back in 2002.
Smith received his award at the Player of the Year banquet on Nov. 28.
Smith will play in the 57th annual Senior Bowl on January 28 in Mobile, Ala. He is the 50th Orange student-athlete to play in the game.
