Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim became the 18th Division I head coach to reach 700 wins in SU’s final regular-season victory last season. Win no. 630 came on this date in 2002 when the Orange defeated Albany, 109-79, in the Carrier Dome. Carmelo Anthony led SU with 28 points, while Hakim Warrick added 22 points.
That game was the first of three consecutive games for Syracuse at home on this date. In 2003, four players scored in double figures, led by Warrick’s 18 points as SU beat UNC Asheville, 81-63. A year later, Warrick recorded a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Orange to a 72-55 victory against Albany.
In 2000, Syracuse held Columbia to just 25 first-half points in a 61-47 victory. Stephen Thompson and Billy Owens each recorded 17 points in the Orange’s 85-64 win against Lafayette in 1989. In 1987, Sherman Douglas scored 29 points in SU’s 110-69 victory against Morehead State.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
