The night before the new year is rung in is a popular basketball date for the Carrier Dome. In the 25-year history of the Dome, the men’s basketball Orange has played on this date 12 times. Including tonight's game against Kent, the Dome has been the site of a men's basketball game in each of the past five seasons.
Last year, Syracuse defeated Hofstra, 80-75. Hakim Warrick led SU with 29 points. In 2003, Billy Edelin tallied a personal-best 29 points in SU’s 87-70 win against Canisius. The Orange also faced Canisius on this date in 2002. Carmelo Anthony recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds and Warrick added 25 points and nine rebounds in an 87-69 SU victory. In 2001, four SU players scored in double figures in an 83-62 win against Buffalo. The Orange also faced in-state foe Niagara on this date in 2000. Six players reached double figures in scoring to lead Niagara to a 95-69 victory.
Marius Janulis connected on a season-high six three-point field goal attempts in Syracuse’s 75-55 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore on this date in 1996. Dave Johnson scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead SU to an 88-63 win against Wichita State in 1991.
Stephen Thompson scored 22 points to lead Syracuse to a 105l-63 win against St. Francis (PA) in 1988. In 1985, five players reached double figures in scoring in an 88-68 victory against C.W. Post. Syracuse defeated U.S. International, 94-81, in 1981.
Syracuse has hosted Boston College twice on this date. In 1986, Derrick Coleman scored 22 points to lead SU to a 96-67 victory. SU’s lone loss on this date came in overtime against the Eagles in 1992. Syracuse overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and Lawrence Moten’s three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining forced overtime. SU scored the first six points of the extra period. However, BC tied the score with 1:02 remaining and Howard Eislay’s three-pointer with six seconds left gave the Eagles a 94-93 victory.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
