The Syracuse men's basketball team has played in the Carrier Dome on December 4 13 times during the past 25 years. The Orange has a 11-2 record in those games.
Five of those wins came in Carrier Classic championship games, most recently in 1999 when SU defeated St. Joseph's, 82-60, in the finals. Lawrence Moten led the Orange with 22 points in Syracuse's 78-62 win against Vanderbilt in the 1993 title game. In 1983, Gene Waldron notched 40 points in SU's 109-92 victory against Iona. The Orange also won the 1988 title with a 106-98 overtime victory against Louisiana Tech and the 1982 tournament championship with a 67-54 win against Princeton on this date.
Syracuse played in the first round of the Carrier Classic three times on December 4. In 1987, SU defeated South Florida, 111-65, and, in 1992, the Orange beat Southern Mississippi, 103-75. On of Syracuse's two losses on this date came in the opening round of the 1998 Carrier Classic. Ohio University defeated the Orange, 61-55.
Head coach Jim Boeheim tied Roy Danforth for second on SU's all-time wins list when his team defeated Canisius, 52-48 in overtime, on this date in 1984. It was his 148th career victory.
In 1990, Syracuse faced North Carolina State in the BIG EAST/ACC Challenge. Dave Johnson scored 24 points to lead SU to a 86-79 win.
The Orange took on West Virginia in its 1996-97 BIG EAST opener on this date. Jason Hart scored 22 points and Todd Burgan added 20 in a 101-79 loss to the Mountaineers.
Syracuse played Central New York foe Colgate in 2004. Hakim Warrick had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead SU to a 68-55 victory. In 2001, the Orange defeated Hofstra, 91-65.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
