The Syracuse football team won its only game played on this date while the men's basketball squad is 4-0 all-time on this date in games played in the Carrier Dome.
The football Orange's only contest in the Dome on this date was the regular-season finale in 2003. Walter Reyes became SU's single-season and career leader in rushing touchdowns, running for five scores in Syracuse's 38-12 victory against Notre Dame in front of 48,170 fans. In addition to his five touchdowns, Reyes ran for 189 yards on 19 carries. His five scores and 30 points are both Dome records.
The game was close through the midway point of the third quarter as the Orange held a 10-6 lead. Reyes scored on a three-yard run and the extra point gave SU a 17-6 advantage. An Irish fumble gave Syracuse the ball at the Notre Dame 36-yard line. Reyes scored his record-breaking touchdown just two plays later from 15 yards out. He accounted for all 36 yards on the drive. Notre Dame intercepted a pass and returned it to the SU 23-yard line. The Irish scored five plays later, but the two-point conversion failed to make the score 24-12. Reyes scored again on a 71-yard run down the right sideline on SU's next play from scrimmage to give the Orange a 31-12 lead. with 11 seconds remaining in the third. He tacked on his fifth score of the game with 10:27 remaining on a three-yard run for the final score of the game.
The Syracuse men's basketball team has played in the Carrier Classic three times on this date. Howard Triche scored 21 points to lead the Orange to a 94-74 win against Northeastern and the 1986 Carrier Classic title. In 1985, SU advanced to the tournament finals with a 97-72 win against LaSalle. Syracuse also played in the first round of the 1991 tournament on this date. The Orange defeated Eastern Kentucky, 84-78.
In 2002, Syracuse faced Central New York foe Cornell in the Dome. Carmelo Anthony and Hakim Warrick posted double-doubles as SU beat the Big Red, 85-62.
