SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse and Colgate meet for the 158th time on Saturday, Dec. 10, in a Central New York basketball series that spans 104 years. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome. The game will be televised by Time Warner 26. Fans can tune in to radio coverage via the Syracuse ISP Radio Network (WAQX 95.7 FM and WNSS 1260 AM).
This marks the 13th-consecutive season that Syracuse and Colgate are meeting on the hardwood. The series began in 1901-02. Since that time, SU has posted a 112-45 record against its neighbor to the east, including 39-straight wins since Colgate’s last victory during the 1961-62 season.
The Orange dropped out of the Top 25 in both major college polls this week, but still received votes. It will look to extend a three-game winning streak and build on a 6-2 season record. Last week, Coach Jim Boeheim’s team came back from 11 points down with two minutes remaining to defeat Manhattan in overtime, 87-82. The Orange followed that up with an 80-64 victory against TCU on Dec. 3. Junior forward Demetris Nichols paces the squad in scoring average (15.5 ppg) and is second in rebounding (7.5 rpg). He has emerged as the Orange’s top three-point scoring threat so far this season, with a team-best 23 three’s on a long-range shooting percentage of 40.4 percent (23-of-57). Senior guard Gerry McNamara is the team leader in assists (6.4 apg) and is second in scoring with 15.4 points per game. Junior forward Terrence Roberts is grabbing 9.4 rebounds per game to lead the squad, while also chipping in with 12.1 points per game. Freshman guard Eric Devendorf, who has started SU’s last three games, is shooting 48 percent from three-point range and is currently averaging nine points per game. SU’s fifth starter, junior center Darryl Watkins, leads the team with 22 blocked shots and averages 7.1 points and rebounds per game.
Colgate, led by eighth-year head coach Emmett Davis, brings a 4-4 record into the Dome Saturday night. The Raiders have won two of their last three games, but most recently lost a 67-59 decision on the road to Quinnipiac on Dec. 5. Prior to that, they had success against Princeton (62-39), Dartmouth (65-64 OT), Florida Atlantic (78-74) and Utah Valley State (55-42). Kyle Roemer leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game and a team-high 22 three-pointers. Kendall Chones is second in scoring with 10.3 points per game, while brother Kyle Chones is the squad’s top rebounder with 8.6 an outing.
