WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior goaltender Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman) and junior attackman Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) were each named to the 2005 Tewaaraton Trophy preseason watch list. This is Crockett's second time being selected as a player to watch for the prestigious honor that is awarded annually to the best player in collegiate lacrosse. It is Pfeifer's first time being recognized by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation announced its preseason watchlist for the Spring of 2005. These players are considered early season indicators of who to watch as the 2005 lacrosse season begins. This list will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five men who constitute the award's finalists.
Crockett is the Orange's lone starter back at the attack position. He finished the 2004 season ranked 16th in the nation in goals per game (2.29) and was the second-leading scorer on the team with 54 points (39 goals, 15 assists). At season's end, he was named to the STX/USILA All-America Third Team.
Pfeifer is beginning his fourth season as Syracuse's starting goaltender. The team is 40-10 with him starting in goal. He has helped SU to two national championships (2002, 2004) and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team both times. Pfeifer seems to shine in the NCAA Tournament, where he owns a 9-1 record. The nine playoff wins ties him with Matt Palumb and Rob Mulligan for most NCAA wins ever recorded by an SU goalie. Pfeifer is sixth on the SU all-time saves list with 576. He needs 24 saves this season in order to reach the 600 mark.
SU attackman Michael Powell became the first two-time winner of the Tewaaraton Trophy in June 2004, after helping the Orange win its ninth national championship in Baltimore. He also won it in 2002 after he led the Orange to the NCAA championship his sophomore year.
Tewaaraton will hold its 5th Annual award ceremony on Thursday, June 2, 2005. The male and female winners are honored, along with the five finalists from each side. The event will take place in Washington D.C. at the National Geographic Society headquarters.
This year's men's selection committee is: Dick Edell, University of Maryland CHAIR; Scott Anderson, Harvard; Erin Quinn, Middlebury College; Tom Postel, C.W.
