SU and Nextel Partner to Benefit American Red Cross
2/7/2005 6:56:40 AM | Men's Basketball
Fans attending the Syracuse University men's basketball game against Connecticut on Monday, February 7 are invited to bring used wireless phones of any make or condition to exchange for an Otto the Orange bobblehead. The donated handsets will be refurbished and activated with 911 service and then donated to the American Red Cross for its use in emergency situations.
Nextel representatives will collect the used wireless phones in the backcourt area of the Carrier Dome. The phones must be in decent condition and have batteries. Any brand of cell phone is acceptable, as long as it is no longer activated. One Otto the Orange bobblehead will be exchanged for each phone. There is a limit of one per person per game and they will be available while supplies last.
The Syracuse-Connecticut basketball game tips off at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. The Carrier Dome gates will open at 5:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-888-DOMETIX or visit online at dometix.com. The Carrier Dome Box Office opens at 9:00 a.m.
Nextel Partners’ efforts are an extension of the Donate-a-Phone program, organized by The Wireless Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. Since launching in September 1999, the national Donate-a-Phone program has resulted in the collection of more than one million used wireless phones from people across the country.
Nextel Partners’ phone collection campaign is a community service initiative launched by the company, which donates thousands of dollars through in-kind contributions of wireless phones and service to local community groups each year. Previously, Nextel Partners has donated free phones and service to schools, police, nonprofits and disaster service organizations across the country, helping organizations reduce crime in neighborhoods, improve safety in schools, operate essential programs and communicate in times of emergency.
