Orange Loses First Game of Kia Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. – Katie Burkhart threw a one-hit shutout to lead the 21st-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils past Syracuse, 4-0, on Wednesday, March 16 at the Kia Softball Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton. SU has lost two straight and is now 9-6 on the season, while the Sun Devils improved to 24-5.
The Orange’s only base runner in the game was senior Tiffany Robinson. Robinson laid down a bunt single in the third inning.
Sophomore Courtney Mosch (5-4) was the losing pitcher for Syracuse. She pitched five innings, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked two. Freshman Erin Downey pitched two innings of relief, giving up two runs, one earned, on one hits. She struck out two and walked one. Burkhart struck out nine for the Sun Devils to improve to 9-2 on the season.
Arizona State scored the only run it would need in the top of the second inning on a bases-loaded walk. Heidi Knable drove in a run with a double in the fifth, and the Sun Devils put the game away with two in the top of the seventh. Mindy Cowles and Ashley Werschky each had two hits in the game.
The game was the first for both teams in the pool portion of the Kia Classic. The Orange will face Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday and Oklahoma on Friday before beginning the bracket part of the tournament on Saturday.
