SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Orange will attempt to hand No. 1-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-0) its first loss of the season and put a halt to its own two-game losing streak when the two teams meet at the Carrier Dome on March 18, at 7 p.m. Syracuse, ranked No. 7 in this week’s Geico/STX Coaches Poll, lost a 10-7 decision to Georgetown in the First 4 last Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Prior to that, the Orange were edged by Virginia at home, 12-11. Syracuse is seeking its first win since the season opener against Army on Feb. 26.
Johns Hopkins, the preseason No. 1, has not lost its grip on the top spot in any poll yet this season. The Blue Jays come into the contest with a perfect 3-0 record after defeating the likes of Princeton (9-6), UMBC (9-6) and Hofstra (11-5). Jesse Schwartzman has won the starting goaltender position for the Jays this year and owns a 5.71 goals against average and a .575 save percentage. Kyle Harrison leads the team in scoring with nine points (four goals, five assists), while Greg Peyser is the team’s top goal scorer with six.
This will be the 41st meeting between Syracuse and Johns Hopkins on the men’s lacrosse field. The Blue Jays lead the all-time series, 23-16-1, and have won four of the last six meetings. Last season, the teams met twice. Hopkins won a 17-5 regular-season game in Baltimore on March 20, while the Orange captured a 15-9 NCAA semifinal win against the Jays at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on May 29, 2004.
