SYRACUSE, NY – Craig Forth, a senior center on the Syracuse University men’s basketball team, has been named to the 2004-05 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. Forth was a second-team selection. He is one of 15 players named to first, second and third team in the University (Division I) Division. The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Forth earned Third Team Academic All-America honors last year. He was an All-District I selection in 2003-04 and 2004-05. An inclusive education and geography major, Forth entered his final semester with a 3.856 grade-point average.
He is the one of four Syracuse players to earn the recognition and the first to be named to the Academic All-America Team more than once. Previous SU honorees include Rick Dean (1967 second team), Danny Schayes (1981 first team) and Bill Smith (1971 second team).
He has started all 131 games of his intercollegiate career, the longest active streak in Division I basketball. Forth ranks eighth all-time in blocked shots at Syracuse (201). He is averaging 5.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. The Orange are ranked 13th in the most recent national polls and own a 24-5 overall record.
He has been named to the BIG EAST Conference Academic All-Star team, which requires a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 while earning a varsity letter, in each of his previous three seasons. Forth has been selected to the Syracuse University Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.0 semester grade-point average) in all seven of his semesters to date.
The “Good Chemistry” Scholarship ($10,000 annually), presented by Bristol Meyers Squibb Company in Syracuse to the University, has been given in Forth’s honor four times. It recognizes his outstanding academic accomplishments and his consistent contribution to great team chemistry in the classroom and on the court.
Forth is on the “Watch List” for the third annual Collegiate Basketball Award of Excellence presented by Creamland Dairies. He is one of 25 on the “Watch List.” He was one of 12 semifinalists for the John Wooden Trophy. The Trophy is presented to two athletes – one intercollegiate and one professional – who best display character, teamwork and citizenship.
In the spring of 2004, Forth participated in the NCAA Leadership Conference at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
