SU Defeats West Virginia, 6-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s tennis team won its fifth BIG EAST match of the spring when it defeated West Virginia, 6-1, on Saturday morning. The Orange improves to 10-6 overall and remains undefeated in conference action at 5-0.

SU began the morning winning the doubles point as the Orange won all three doubles matches. Freshmen duo Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki swept Natalia Prinz and Kelly Walsh, 8-0, at the top spot, while junior Wei-Ming Leong and sophomore Katie Bramante defeated Stacey Percival and Raynie Theis, 8-3, at the No. 2 position, and sophomores Carolina Huignard and Ashley Lipton won their match at No. 3, 8-5, against Colleen Speaker and Ashley Constantine.

The top five singles positions all captured victories for the Orange. Vaynberg won at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-1, against Prinz, while Zawadzki defeated Walsh, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Lipton defeated Constantine, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot, Huignard defeated Catherine Koontz, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot, while Bramante won at the No. 5 spot, 7-5, 6-4, against Theis.

The Orange concludes its home schedule for the 2005 season on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m. against American.
