SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse tennis team won its 11th match of the season on Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Tennis Center as the Orange swept American, 7-0. The Orange improved to 11-6 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST. With the loss, American is now 1-15 this season.
It is the most wins the Orange has compiled since the 1999-2000 season when Syracuse finished with a 16-6 record. It is just the fifth time a SU team has won 10-plus matches in a season since the program began in the 1975-76 academic year.
The Orange began the match by winning the doubles point. Freshmen Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki defeated Julia Colarusso and Tessa Hollyn-Taub, 8-4 at the No. 1 position, while Wei-Ming Leong and Katie Bramante defeated Rachael Honig and Brandi Kligman, 8-1 at the No. 2 position. At the No. 3 position, Jessica Juricek and Pearly Leung swept Merrisa Hollinger and Brynne Ward, 8-0. This was the first match that the Orange played with this doubles line-up so far during the dual season.
Syracuse won all six of the singles matches, including two 6-0, 6-0. Vaynberg won 6-0, 6-1 against Colarusso at the No. 1 position. Zawadzki defeated Hollyn-Taub, 6-2, 6-0, while Lipton won against Honig with a sweep, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Huignard defeated Kligman, 6-0, 6-1, and Bramante won against Hollinger, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 position. Freshman Kendyl Severino made her first appearance on the court this spring, playing at the No. 6 position. Severino won the match, defeating Ward 6-1, 6-1.
Syracuse will play its final regular-season BIG EAST match at Boston College on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. The Orange then plays Boston University on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m.
