The Orange is back in action at 7:05 p.m., on March 29, when it visits Hobart’s McCooey Field. A capacity crowd is expected for the 20th Kraus-Simmons Trophy game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to ensure a seat in the grandstand. The game will be televised live by Time Warner Sports Channel 26 in the Syracuse/Central New York area. Doug Wright and Dale Drypolcher will call the action. CSTV will air the game on a tape delay basis at 1 p.m., on April 2.
SU halted a three-game losing skid last weekend with a 10-8 win at Princeton. Six different Orange players scored and the defense held Princeton to eight goals on 29 shots. Syracuse is now 2-3 on the season and looking to move to .500 with a win against Hobart.
The Statesmen are 5-1 and looking for their second consecutive win after earning an important victory against conference foe Rutgers last weekend, 16-10. Hobart’s other wins have come against Butler (11-7), Binghamton (10-7), Ohio State (9-6) and Robert Morris (15-10). The only blemish in the Statesemen results came on March 19, when they lost an 11-9 decision to Georgetown.
This game marks the 91st meeting between Syracuse and Hobart since 1916. The Orange controls the all-time series, 64-24-2, and have won the last 18 meetings, including last year’s 16-10 decision in Syracuse. The last time the Statesmen defeated the ‘Cuse was on April 19, 1986 in Geneva. Hobart won that game by a score of 16-13. The Statesmen have never won at the Carrier Dome. Their last win at Syracuse was in 1979.
The Syracuse-Hobart rivalry is one of the oldest and fiercest in all of college lacrosse, certainly within upstate New York.
The winner of the Syracuse-Hobart game claims the Kraus-Simmons Trophy, named in honor of legendary SU coach Roy Simmons Sr. and former Hobart coach Babe Kraus.
The Orange has won the trophy the last 18 times in the 19-year existence of the tradition. The Statesmen won the first Kraus-Simmons Trophy in 1986 with a 16-13 decision in Geneva.
