Four SU Football Student-Athletes Earn BIG EAST Academic Honors

Senior center Matt Tarullo (Albany, N.Y.) headlines a list of four Syracuse University football student-athletes who were named to the 2004 BIG EAST All-Academic Football Team. A CoSIDA Academic All-American, Tarullo is a four-time recipient of the BIG EAST honor. Juniors Steve Franklin (Dover, Del.), Kurt Falke (Industry, Texas) and Tommy Harris (Daytona Beach, Fla.) are also members of the 2004 BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Tarullo earned a dual degree in psychology and communications and rhetoric with a 3.74 grade point average. Tarullo started for two years at guard as a sophomore and junior before shifting to the starting center position for his senior campaign in 2004. In addition to his success on the field and in the classroom, Tarullo was dedicated to the Syracuse community. The 2004 team captain was selected to the 2004 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team, recognizing his efforts in the community and the classroom. Tarullo participated in the 2003 Boys and Girls Club Charity Basketball game and was a keynote speaker for the 2002 New York State National Football Foundation’s annual banquet. Tarullo was also an active participant in SU’s Student-Athlete Council, which leads the ‘Cuse Cares community service program.
Franklin, a child and family studies major, started all 12 games as an offensive guard for the Orange in his second year on the squad. He is one of 21 repeat selections on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team having earned the honor in his first year at SU in 2003. Franklin was also a member of the 2003 Fall and 2004 Syracuse University Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. As a sophomore he started 11-of-12 games at guard.
Falke, a communications and rhetoric major, played in seven games at offensive tackle and as a tight end in short yardage situations in his first season with the Orange. He earned a spot on the 2004 Spring SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll after transferring to SU from Blinn Community College in January, 2004.
Harris, an information management and technology major, played linebacker for the 2004 squad. He recorded 12 tackles, including seven solo, and forced and recovered a fumble. He posted a career-best five tackles at Boston College. Harris was a member of the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in the Fall of 2003 and the Spring of 2004.
The 2005 football squad begins Spring practice on March 28. The annual Spring game will be Saturday, April 23 at the Carrier Dome. Season tickets are available now at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX).
