Orange Tennis Wins First Match at BIG EAST Championships

TAMPA, FLA. – The third-seed Syracuse women’s tennis team won its first match of the BIG EAST Championship, 4-0, against sixth-seed Seton Hall on Thursday, April 21, in Tampa, Fla.

Syracuse won the doubles point by claiming victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Freshman Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki came off the court first with an 8-3 victory against Viviana Figueroa and Iva Gyurgina at the top spot. Sophomore Ashley Lipton and freshman Pearly Leung, playing for the first time together, had the Orange’s deciding doubles point as the defeated Catalina Isaza and Lorell Zamot, 8-2.

The Orange’s momentum did not slow down in singles action, as SU won the first three matches that finished, and claimed the match for the Orange. Vaynberg won at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-3, against Figueroa, while sophomore Katie Bramante defeated Isaza, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 position, giving the Orange the 3-0 advantage.

Junior Wei-Ming Leong, playing in the singles lineup for the first time since the Army match, March 4, had the match-deciding victory at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-0, against Veronika Gerka.

SU was winning in its other three singles matches when the match was decided, and those matches did not finish.

Syracuse next meets second-seed Boston College at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 22 in the second round. Top-seed Notre Dame faces fourth-seed St. John’s in the morning match at 9 a.m. The winners of those two matches with compete in the BIG EAST Championship match on Saturday, April 23 at 12 p.m.
