Tennis Advances to BIG EAST Championship Match

TAMPA, FLA. – The No. 3 seed Syracuse women’s tennis team defeated No. 2 seed Boston College, 4-2, on Friday, April 22 for a chance to play Notre Dame in the women’s BIG EAST Tennis Championship final, set to begin at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23.
Boston College jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, earning the point awarded for doubles competition. The Eagles won at the No. 1 and 3 positions, while at the time the doubles point was decided, SU was winning its match at the No. 2 spot, as sophomore Katie Bramante and junior Wei-Ming Leong had the 7-6 advantage against Szilvia Szegedi and Lindsey Nash.
In the singles portion, Syracuse won the four required points, winning four singles matches to earn the 4-2 win. Freshman Victoria Vaynberg defeated Szegedi at the top singles position, 6-4, 6-1. Bramante won 7-5, 6-3 against Gia Nafarrette at the No. 5 spot, while freshman Pearly Leung defeated Amy Molden, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
With SU having the 3-2 edge, sophomore Ashley Lipton had the match-clinching win at the No. 3 position, 7-5, 6-4, against Morgan Landes, to send the Orange to the championship match.
Syracuse looks to win its first women’s tennis title since 1985. The Orange returns to the title match for the first time since losing to Miami in 1995. Syracuse will face No. 1 seed Notre Dame. The Irish are looking for their first title since 2003.
Just last weekend, Boston College handed the Orange its only conference lost during the regular season with a 6-1 defeat.
