WORCESTER, Mass. – The Syracuse women’s varsity eight captured the BIG EAST crown on Sunday afternoon at the BIG EAST Championship. SU finished the 2,000-meter course on Lake Quinsigamond in 8:05.18, while Notre Dame finished second in 8:19.27.
SU finished third in the varsity four “A” in 10:09.1, while the Orange’s varsity four “B” finished second in 9:13.8. SU’s novice eight finished fifth in 9:10.4. The Orange’s JV eight boat won its heat, but ended up under water in the finals and the team was immersed in the lake. After not entering a boat in the novice four, Syracuse was hoping to make a run at the team conference title with only five boats, those hopes sank with the JV eight boat.
Notre Dame claimed the team conference title, while SU finished fifth. After the four previous conference regattas were "challenges," the 2005 event was conducted for the first time as a BIG EAST championship. Syracuse won the first three conference regattas and Notre Dame has won the last two.
SU hosts the Orange Plus Cup versus UMass and Villanova on Onondaga Lake on April 30.
