RICHMOND, Va. - The Villa 7 Consortium has selected some of the top men's basketball assistant coaches, including Syracuse's Mike Hopkins and Rob Murphy, to attend an educational symposium held in Charlotte, N.C. at the Hilton Charlotte University Place on May 17-19. This event will feature some of the greatest minds in coaching, as well as serve as a networking opportunity, as several athletic directors will be on hand throughout the course of the week.
The Consortium is a partnership between the VCU SportsCenter, an innovative graduate program in sports leadership, Nike and Daktronics that was created for the benefit of both the assistant basketball coach and athletic director. The chief goal of this symposium is to provide opportunities for these coaches, who are considered to be the very best in college basketball, to advance their careers towards a head coaching position.
"We are very proud to have such high-caliber coaches as a part of the Villa 7 Consortium," said Dr. Richard Sander, VCU's director of athletics. "We feel that they are the ones who will be considered for the top jobs in thevery near future and that the experiences they'll receive in Charlotte will be nothing but beneficial to their careers."
Scheduled to speak are Bob Beaudine, the president and CEO of Eastman & Beaudine, which was recently named "the top executive recruiting firm in college sports" by the Wall Street Journal. Frank Haith, who just finished his first year as a head coach at the University of Miami, will share his thoughts on the first 100 days on the job. Fran Fraschilla, former NABC Coach of the Year and current ESPN college basketball analyst, will also be on hand.
Two special panels will highlight coaching veterans as well as some of the up-and-comers in the business. Morgan Wootten, Bobby Cremins and Jeff Capel, Jr. will participate in the Legends of Coaching panel, while Jeff Capel, III of VCU, Norm Roberts of St. John¹s and Darrin Horn of Western Kentucky will highlight the Young Guns segment. ESPNU will also be on hand to discuss television¹s impact on the future of college basketball.
Division I athletic directors and conference commissioners will also be participating throughout the three-day conference. The Consortium is a continuation of a project created by the VCU SportsCenter in July of 2004. Held in Las Vegas, at the Mirage in the Villa 7 suite, the staff hosted an event to assist in the creation of networking opportunities between assistant coaches and athletic directors. The gathering generated an exchange of information and forged new professional relationships.
