PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference announced the home and away opponents for the 2005-06 women’s basketball season on Monday. As of July 1, 2005, the BIG EAST will expand to 16 teams with the addition of the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. The conference season will consist of 16 games, eight at home and eight on the road. Each team will play seven teams at home, seven teams on the road and one team twice.
The Orange will face BIG EAST newcomer Louisville twice next season. SU’s seven home-only opponents are Cincinnati, Connecticut, Georgetown, Marquette, Notre Dame, St. John’s and West Virginia. The Orange will play road games at DePaul, Pittsburgh, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, South Florida and Villanova. Dates and times will be announced at a later date.
Even with the expansion, the BIG EAST Tournament will stay the same format. The top 12 teams in the league standings will advance to the conference postseason.
Syracuse has a history with four of the five teams joining the league next season. The Orange is 1-1 all-time versus Cincinnati, 1-0 against Louisville, 2-2 versus Marquette and 2-0 against South Florida. SU and DePaul have never met in women’s basketball.
SU completed the 2004-05 season with a 13-16 overall mark and a 4-12 record in BIG EAST play. The Orange more than doubled its win total from the 2003-04 season and earned its first conference tournament win since 2002 with a first-round upset of Georgetown.
