SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse women’s basketball head coach Keith Cieplicki has announced the hiring of Mary McKissack as an assistant coach for the Orange. McKissack will begin her duties immediately.
At Syracuse, McKissack will assist with all aspects of the program, including game preparation, individual instruction, scouting and recruiting. She will also work with the Orange guard corps.
“We’re very happy to have Mary join our staff,” Cieplicki said. “She will be a good fit for our program because of her energy and enthusiasm for the game of basketball.”
McKissack has spent the last two seasons as assistant coach at LeMoyne. She was involved in all areas of the Dolphin’s program, including on-court instruction, recruiting and scouting. She also was responsible for organizing team travel and monitoring student-athlete academic progress.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me,” McKissack said. “I’ve been in the area the past two years so I’ve been able to see the positive direction that this program is headed in. I’m very excited to be a part of this staff. There’s a great group of coaches and student-athletes here.”
In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, McKissack has worked several instructional camps, including ones at LeMoyne, Siena College and the Rubino’s Capital District Post Players Camp.
McKissack graduated from Siena with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2003. She was a four-year member of the Saints’ women’s basketball team that won three straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season championships. She also played on the Saints’ NCAA-qualifying team in 2001, and in the Women’s NIT in 2002 and 2003. She was named team captain of the squad in her final two seasons.
Cieplicki also announced that Lakisha Covington has been named the Orange’s director of basketball operations. Covington was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Elon College last season where, in addition to her recruiting and coaching duties, she served as the team’s travel coordinator. Covington worked at St. Paul’s College for two years where she served as an assistant women’s basketball coach, the head volleyball coach for one season and the head softball coach for one season. Covington is a 2001 graduate of Winston-Salem State University.
