FRISCO, TX -- Less than 24 hours after learning he had earned a spot on the USA Basketball Under-21 World Championship team, Syracuse junior Terrence Roberts scored 10 points in a 81-66 victory against Slovenia on July 28 in the Global Games. The outing is one of four the USA is competing in as a tune-up for the 2005 FIBA U21 World Championship, to be played Aug. 5-14 in Cordoba and Mar del Plata, Argentina.
Roberts started at forward on Thursday night and hit five-of-six shots from the field whil accumulating the 10 points in 13 minutes of work. He added three rebounds. Duke's J.J. Redick led the Americans with 15 points. Next up is a Global Games matchup with unbeaten Lithuania on July 29. On Saturday, July 30, the medal rounds will be played out. The Global Games are being conducted at the Dr. Pepper Star Center in Frisco, Texas.
"There were times when we had a lot of energy, but then we didn't convert on the other end and our energy dissipated," said USA and Saint Joseph's (Pa.) head coach Phil Martelli. "One of the things we have to remember is that these guys are young. This event is called the (FIBA) Young Men's World Championship (now the U21 World Championship) for a reason. I'm confident now that we have their attention."
On Wednesday, July 27, the USA Basketball staff of Martelli and assistant's Bruiser Flint from Drexel and Georgia's Dennis Felton announced the final 12-man roster, which included Roberts. SU head coach Jim Boeheim is chair of the USA Basketball Committee.
