August 16: I is for Instant Replay
The BIG EAST is just one of many college football conferences implementing instant replay this season. Each conference has their own system and rules that they will follow this season. Be part of the growing excitement every day leading up to SU’s first game (Sept. 4 vs. West Virginia) with our Countdown to Kickoff: A to Z.
The BIG EAST’s instant replay system is designed to allow specific types of officiating mistakes to be immediately reviewed and corrected during all Conference games. Syracuse may use replay during home non-conference match-ups if they receive prior approval by the visiting team.
There will be three instant replay officials working in the press box of each game. The replay official, who is considered a game official, will be in charge of making all decisions. There must be indisputable video evidence for a change to be made by the replay official. The technician is in charge of handling the replay equipment. Finally, the communicator will be interacting with both.
During televised games, all reviewable video will come directly from the television network broadcasting the game (ABC Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, etc.). In non-televised games, all reviewable video will come directly from four in house video cameras. The review process will never use both television and in-house cameras in any one game.
The BIG EAST Conference Instant Replay System differs from the NFL Model. A review can only be triggered by the Replay Official in the press box. Unlike the NFL, there are no coaches’ challenges, a limit to the number of plays that can be reviewed, and time-outs are not charged to teams based on the outcome of the reviews. In addition, the status of the game clock is reviewable.
Syracuse opens the 2005 season on Sunday, September 4 against West Virginia. The game kicks off at 1:30 and will be televised nationally on ABC.
